The sixth annual PENPEX was held on December 3-4, 1988 at the Redwood City Community Activity Building. The 52 frames of 12 pages each were open only to the sponsoring clubs and Golden Gate Stamp Club members. The entry fee was free.
The show cachet featured the 1928 Durant sedan. William C. Durant established General Motors in 1908, and in 1911 he formed Chevrolet Motor Co. by merger. In 1916, he became General Motors president. After departing as CEO of General Motors, in the 1921, Durant started up the Durant Motor Company. One of the plants was located in Oakland, California. The 1928 Durant 4-door sedan had 4-wheel brakes, balloon tires, and sold for about $1,500.
PENPEX entered the artistic Durant cachet in the Albuquerque Philatelic Society’s First National Show Cachet Competition. The cachet not only got one of three gold awards, but was honored with the Grand Award.
A complete History of PENPEX exhibit will be on display at PENPEX 2011 on December 3 and 4 at the Community Activity Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City. The stamp show is free and open to the public.
